Common Home Building Mistakes

Building a new, custom home can feel like a daunting task. While the innumerable ways that you can customize your home is an exciting prospect, it also leaves a lot of room for potential mistakes if you are not experienced with homebuilding. You will find yourself juggling many different decisions that need to be made, including location, floorplans, features, budgets, and more. If custom home building isn’t your profession, then it can be difficult to know where to start.

Luckily, UrbanLUX Builders has over 20 years of experience in custom home building in the San Antonio area. Our home building professionals are experts in the process and can guide you through the process. They will help you avoid some of the most common mistakes, which can include:

Choosing the Wrong Location

Many people think that they are going to have to sacrifice a good location for a better price. If you are working with the right people, this isn’t the case. Choosing the right location isn’t something you should feel like you have to sacrifice. Sometimes, the location can be just as important as the actual home. After all, your location determines a lot of factors in your life. These factors can include the nearest schools, proximity to beautiful natural surroundings, a city versus country feel, and many more. We suggest that you don’t let the excitement of building a beautiful home overshadow the importance of choosing a good location.

One way to ensure that you are choosing an ideal location is to consider the communities that your builder works in. Once you have decided on floorplans and features, you can consider different communities and how they might best fit your lifestyle. For example, UrbanLUX Builders communities in the San Antonio area include Monteola, the Canyons at Scenic Loop, the Overlook at Boerne, and the Reserve at SaddleHorn. Each of these exclusive communities has different features and amenities to suit you and your family.

Not Planning For The Future

When caught up in the excitement of building a custom home, it can be difficult to think long-term. However, if you are building the house of your dreams, why not build a house that will last you forever? Your home is an investment that you want to keep paying off for many years to come.

As we get older, the amenities we need in our home changes. Luckily, there are a few trends in custom home building that lend themselves well toward “aging in place”. One of these trends is ranch-style builds. Ranch homes, or one-story homes, are not only popular, but are also valuable as we grow older and navigating stairs can become more difficult. Likewise, many floorplans, even for two-story homes, include first-floor master bedrooms which are useful for the same reason. By taking a bit of time to consider your future needs, you can ensure that your custom-built home will last you a lifetime.

Too Few Bathrooms

One of the many details in custom home building that can escape people is the number of bathrooms in their homes. Many older houses only have one or two bathrooms, making many of us used to sharing a small number of bathrooms. However, with new homes, it is becoming more popular to increase the number of bathrooms. As a rule of thumb, you should aim for two bathrooms for every three bedrooms. So, a three-bedroom home should have at least two bathrooms. The idea behind this is that the master bedroom would have a separate bathroom, and the other two bedrooms would share a bathroom. If you are building a two-story house, it can be beneficial to have at least a half-bathroom on the first floor, as well.

Under or Overestimating the Budget

One of the most difficult parts of the home building process is to determine your budget and plan accordingly. If you are unfamiliar with custom home building then you run the risk of under or overestimating the cost. If you underestimate the cost, then you may end up jumping into a project you aren’t ready for. If you overestimate the cost of a new build, then you may end up paying more than you need to.

At UrbanLUX Builders, we aim to build luxury houses at affordable prices. We ensure that our clients understand the budget every step of the way so that there are no surprises.

Considering Resale Value

Although the goal is to custom-build your forever home, it is also important to consider the possibility that you may need to sell in the future. When choosing the design, architecture, and features of your new home, you should also consider the resale value. Your home should reflect your personal design style, but should also be sellable if you ever need to move. Some areas of the home are worth investing in, such as the kitchen, for the resale value added to the home.
