Custom Homes and Child Proofing

Babyproofing your custom home is important.

It is important to remember that while you may know not to touch a hot stove, fall in the tub, or swallow something that isn’t food, your child doesn’t. If you have small children, it is important that you are aware of just how many dangers there are in a traditional home. Though you may assume that your home is safe, you should never leave your baby alone. Small children not only do not know the dangers lurking in your home, but they may not even have complete control over their motor functions.

In this blog, we will be discussing some of the items to think about when installing them in your new home. At UrbanLux Builders, we have the pleasure to build custom homes for young families in the San Antonio area. With this being said, we strive to provide our customers with safe residences to raise their children. While we can certainly build comfortable homes, we cannot make every inch of your home safe for your children. Ultimately, your ability to foresee problem areas in your home is your responsibility as a parent.

Why baby proofing is mandatory in a new home

You love your children and want the best for them. You may think that there is nowhere safer than your home, but the truth of it is, your home has more potential dangers than anywhere else. If you take your child in public, you will typically have your “head on a swivel” and watch out for their well-being. While at home, you are far more relaxed. After all, your home is your sanctuary. But, when you are less alert, more accidents can happen, especially if you have a small child.

Babies have no understanding of dangers, which is why they can swallow, drink, or touch something that could severely hurt them. With this in mind, you should never leave a baby alone, less so if you have not baby-proofed your home.
Baby proofing is essential and actually is a lot simpler than you may think. Department stores and online shops sell hardware and simple devices to keep your child safe from falling and putting their hands where they shouldn’t be. For instance, outlet child-locks make it simple to protect your child from accidental electrocution.

It is important to be mindful.

Choking

In 2016, there were more than 1,141 child deaths due to suffocation and choking. Choking is one of the leading causes of infant deaths in America. Children can often pick something up and choose to put it in their mouth. The smallest of items, such as a tiny ball or a too big of a bite of food can suffocate your child if you are not paying attention. One of the best things you can do for your child is to baby proof your home. Baby proofing doors and cabinets is the best way to ensure that your child doesn’t place something in their mouth that they shouldn’t. You should always make sure that all small toys are placed in boxes and stored above your child’s reach. It is also important that you put your storage boxes somewhere secure. A terrible consequence of storing items is that they can easily topple over and crush (or kill) your child.

Drowning

Drowning is the number one cause of child deaths in America. Most children do not learn how to swim until they are older, which means up until that point, they are susceptible to drowning. Drowning incidents don’t always have to happen with a large body of water. Your child could easily drown from something as simple as falling over in the bath or the shower. Because of this, you must remain vigilant to keep a watchful eye on your child at all times. You also need to enforce the use of flotation devices any time your child is near water.

Falling

Falling can be traumatic for anyone, but for a young child, the consequences could be deadly. Aside from brain trauma, falling could also mean your child could be impaled or suffer life-long mental illness. Because falling is such a dangerous thing to happen to your child, it is important never to leave them alone on a high surface. Secondly, you should always have step stools near your kitchen counter or anywhere that is elevated. Much of falling injuries are due to the child’s own instability and a parent’s absent-mindedness. Your child can easily choose to stand up in unstable places, such as their high-chair or on your shopping cart. It is important to enforce strict rules to ensure their safety as your child grows up.

One primary way to ensure your child doesn’t fall from high places in your new custom home is by constructing a single-level home. Single-level homes can ensure that your child is not at risk of jumping from high places or falling down your staircase. And, if you simply must have a multi-level home, you can always choose to put up baby gates to deter your child from going up or down the stairs alone.
