The Steps of Building a House

Just like the recipe your favorite cake, you want to follow the right steps when building a home. By following the right process, this will ensure you will be satisfied with the end product. At UrbanLux Builders, we have plenty of experience building homes in San Antonio; we know what steps need to be taken, when they should be taken, and in what order. The following are the steps needed to build a custom house.

Custom home building takes a lot of preparation. No builder can start building a home on a whim. The process of custom home building takes planning and preparation in many different ways. For instance, if you are building a home, you will need to prepare the land for the home’s construction. This means you will need to level the area you are building on. This will ensure that your new home has solid, even ground to be constructed on. Second, you will need to observe the land and determine how the drainage system will work. If you are building on a hill or slightly angled land, you will need to build a retaining wall to move the water away from your house.
Preparation isn’t just reserved for the land of your house, you will have to prepare financially as well. For one, you will need to save enough money to not only build your custom home, but still make payments to the home or apartment you are living in. And, custom home costs don’t just end at building the home itself; you have to take into account how much supplying the interior of your house with furniture will cost.

Aside from monetarily preparing yourself, you will need to make definite plans for your house. Your blueprints will determine what the house will look like upon completion.

Construct framing

Once the blueprints have been approved, your builder can begin constructing the framing of your house. This step is actually a long step because it involves many different tasks. For instance, constructing a frame for your house involves building the base of your house, the floor, and the wooden frame. The wooden framework of your house is responsible for the supports of your house, as well as the basic skeleton of your home’s layout.

Complete rough plumbing, electrical, HVAC

Once the wood frame of your home is complete, your builder will need to contact a subcontractor to help build the plumbing, electrical, and HVAC of your home. These systems are vital to your home and need to be installed properly before any other step. If there are any issues with any of these systems, the consequences can be costly to you and your home. For instance, issues with your plumbing system can be problematic later on when your house is fully constructed. That also means, however, that if there are plumbing issues, you might have to break apart your newly constructed home to reach the main plumbing lines.

Install insulation

Insulation is necessary to regulate the temperatures in your home. Without insulation, you would not be able to stay warm in the winter or cool in the summer; your air conditioning units and heaters would also not be able to trap in either heat or cold air. Therefore, your house would never fluctuate in indoor temperature. And, insulation is also extremely important to regulate moisture. If your insulation isn’t installed properly, moisture can build up and cause mold outbreaks in your home. Of course, mold can be exceptionally destructive to your home, which after building a new home, the last thing you want is mold damage.
Your builder will have to subcontract a trusted insulation company to help install the insulation for your home. After the insulation is completely installed, you can then move onto the aesthetic features of your house.

Complete drywall and interior textures

Drywall is needed to build and structure your walls. Without drywall, your home is just a complex system of wood beams. But with drywall installed, your home and its rooms can take shape. Once the drywall is installed, you can then move on to the interior textures of your home, which includes things like the textures of your ceilings, walls, etc.

Finish interior trim

Now that you have moved on to the more aesthetic features of your home, your builder will need to finish the interior trim of your house. Once this trim is complete, your builder can move on to the interior processes of your custom home building project.

Stay tuned as we continue to discuss the process of building a custom home.
